Can my unborn baby get addicted to Vicodin?

I have an injured back. It was injured PRIOR to getting pregnant. As my belly grew and my weight went up I was having even more pain. My OB/GYN put me on Vicodin because nothing else was working. He assured me it was safe. I've recently done some research on the internet regarding Vicodin and found there are contradictions regarding whether or not the baby will be born addicted. Has anyone been in my shoes before and how did it work out? I have since stopped taking it everyday and only take it when the pain is REALLY REALLY bad, usually after cleaning the house or doing laundry or driving for long periods of time. My doctor STILL assures me the baby will be fine. I just don't want my baby to "withdrawl" from ANY narcotic during it's first few days of life. I wouldn't be any better than a mother giving birth to a "Crack Baby". Any advice would be helpful.

Can my unborn baby get addicted to Vicodin?
I'm going to beg you to spare your baby any medication. I have a very painful chronic pain condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystophy. While pregnant there is pain 24/7, I cry can't walk and hardly can crawl around to do chores. There are days I can't drive or leave the house, times where the pain is so severe that air on the skin can cause me to scream into my pillow. I am on my second pregnancy and will not be responsible for putting my baby's health at risk. Any pain God gives me I will and can handle for my baby's health. These are only a few of the pain symptoms I have - yes there are more but none worth putting my baby on pills.
Reply:anything that goes into your body goes into the baby. so yes
Reply:Vicodin is addictive in adults.....why wouldn't it be in newborns???

While I am sure your newborn will not be out trying to score vicodin shortly after birth.....the child will most likely experience withdrawl symptoms.....shaking and crying.

And if vicodin is found in your newborns bloodstream you may have some serious questions to answer weather your Doctor prescribed it or not

I would get a new OBGYN as soon as possible and request a visit with a neonatologist to make sure the vicodin has not affected the baby.
Reply:As a surgeon, though not a OBGYN, the answer is YES!
Reply:If you're taking vicodin only every few days, the baby should be fine. Hydrocodone/acetaminophen (the generic name) is an addictive medication, but only when taken regularly. The stronger the dosage, of course, the more dangerous it could be, so if a half tablet is enough to work for you then that would be better than taking the whole tablet. Of course, if your pain is so severe that you're having problems getting through the day, it may be worth it to continue the medication regularly. There's no guarantee that it will or will not effect the baby, so just be careful and take it only when you have to.
Reply:Honey adults get addicted to vicoden so I guess the answer would be yes the baby certainly could. I would suggest asking a specialist. It sounds as if your ob/gyn hasn't done his homework.
Reply:When I was in the in my 26 week of pregnancy with my blood clot, I was given Demerol, and Vicodin during the week I was in the hospital. I had severe back pain due to complete bed rest while in the hospital (also due to the fact that I was laying on a labor and deliver bed for much of the time and those are Not comfortable at all) Anyway, I think that if you use the medication, only when the pain really, really bad then I think everything will be fine. Try to get some help from family and friends with some of your housework so you don't have to be in that situation as much. I am sure that your husband or other loved one would love to help you out.

As for my baby she was born perfectly healthy. I am glad I took the medication, because it really helped me through a difficult time.

Whatever you do, I am sure that you will make the right decision. You obviously care a lot for your baby, and you know your body better than anyone, so you know if you need the medication or not. Take care.
