My daughter is 20 months old, but she is not speaking yet, she talks in her baby language all the time.?

She talks in her own baby language. She utters only few words like mumma, shoes. She can understand everything, but she doesn't want to speak. Is that normal for a 20 month old.

My son was a late talker. He was only saying about 15 words at 24 months. He's 28 months now and has a huge vocablulary and is now using phrases to get what he wants.

You should really only be concerned when they lose words that they already knew. Of course if you have concerns your doctor can do an evaluation, but remember some kids just don't want to talk right away. Don't let it worry you.

Reply:My daughter wasn't talking much at that age. No first words,no mama or dada, just baby latin. I called early intervention...the board of education in your area should be able to tell you the number. They provide free in home services until the child is 3 then they can help get the child into early preschool. They helped my daughter a lot. They introduced sign language. I was very skeptical but she started speaking with the signs within a few months and her frustration was lessened. It was amazing. She learned over 400 signs with me. She is now almost 4,in early preschool with an IEP,speech services and is speaking up a storm and her signing has pretty much vanished. Early intervention will also do hearing tests and evaluate your child to make sure there isn't anything going on.Check it out.
Reply:Its normal for some kids to talk late especially if they dont have older siblings or are around other kids my co-workers son spoke baby language until he was three and started pre-school. my nephew(3yrs) and my son(3yrs) are 2 days apart and my nephew speak more clear and has a bigger vocabulary than my son because he has an older brother(5yrs).
Reply:this is not normal for a 20 month old. she should say close to 50 words by now. Jerseygurl1224 is totally right. get early intervention involved today. I was pretty sure there was something wrong when my son was 18 months old, but the doctor said not to worry. At 24 months old he only said about 10 words. the doctor said nothing. I contacted early intervention, and they tested him. he failed multiple screenings for his speech. they sent him to a speech therapist who tested him too. he tested a full 12 months behind in speaking, but right on target for understanding. He was having more than 12 tantrums a day, over simple things like wanting to flip the light switch. the speech therapist told us to get a series of DVDs called "signingtimes", and started helping him learn to talk.within a week he was having less tantrums because he used signs instead of grunts to tell us what he wanted. he has doubled his vocabulary, and knows probably 100 signs in less than 3 months. we recently found out that he probably has apraxia (basically is tongue is weak). now we are starting to do some home therapy to help strengthen his mouth muscles.

I really wish that I had gotten him tested when he was 18 months old. he could have started therapy sooner and made more progress by now.
Reply:nothing to worry about... my daughter is almost 20 months also and she's the same... understands EVERYTHING... doesn't say many clear words. but communicates in her own way.

how children communicate is much more important than how many words they say...

give her more time... she'll be speaking a new word every day very soon... each child is different.
Reply:The question is: how do YOU talk to her?

Do you do the baby thing back to her?

Talk to her how you want her to talk to you. When she keeps doing the baby language, pretend that you don't understand what she wants. She'll quickly change her tune.
Reply:Normal. You should learn to understand her. If you take the time to listen, you will notice that her vocabulary is much higher than you thought.
Reply:Totally normal! She's actually talking in our language, but her pronunciation hasn't developed yet. By the time she's two and a half, she'll be talking your ear off!
Reply:it takes time keep talking to her she will eventully catch on and when your not paying attenchen or when your talking with someone else she is really listing to what your saying
Reply:not really.. take her to a specialist. perhaps you can get a speech therapist.
