Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes before they come in my house?

I have a one year old, and I am very picky about my house. I have a small "no shoes" sign (it's a cute lil sign, not a demanding type sign" out by the door, but I've had a few people act as if I'm being ridiculous by asking them to take them off when all I want to do is keep the house sanitary for my baby! It's just really annoying when people come it with muddy shoes and an "oops!" attitude when I mop twice a day. I don't think I'm asking too much.. but some people apparently do, a couple have even refused to do it! (apparently their shoes are hard to tie. IDK)

Is it rude of me to ask people to remove their shoes before they come in my house?
No i dont, i think its rude if people dont automatically take shoes off or ask if you would like them off, but thats just how i grew up.
Reply:It is in no way rude. I for one would love it if others had enough respect to take their shoes off in my home. It is nice to see you have the guts to hang up a sign...and you should follow through on your quest. You are the one paying taxes on it also. If people do not like your way's....it is called stay home. I am glad you are doing this..what is on people's shoes is just plain nasty....just think about it. You go..
Reply:No, it is not rude if it is a relative or close friend. Most people will not come into a house with muddy shoes on.

If you were having a party and many of the people were just casual acquaintances, I would say it would be a bit rude to expect them to take their shoes off.
Reply:Not at all. I do it. My kids, husband, and myself remove our shoes as soon as we get into the house. If someone comes to the door and plans to move around in my home, the shoes come off. I hate cleaning up messes that could be avoided with taking off shoes, so its no longer an option. You enter, you remove shoes.
Reply:I have a no shoes rule for all the kids in the neighborhood, but I would never ask adults to take off their shoes. I would rather mop behind them than seem inhospitable.

The baby needs to be exposed to every day germs to build up his immune system.
Reply:Are you serious? If they refused to take off of their shoes I would refuse them access to my house. The shoes go or they do. It is your house and you can ask them to remove their shoes. I don't wear shoes in my house and neither is anyone else. Put your foot down and stick to it.
Reply:I find it very rude. You are insulting your adult guests. Floors are made to be walked on. I do not remove my shoes unless the weather outside has made my shoes muddy. Supply a rug to wipe their shoes by the door.
Reply:ummm no

it is your house.

we dont wear shoes in our house, but we dont have rules about it or anything. it is just something we do.

yeah, people should be more respectful.
Reply:It's your house and with it comes your rules. Same with everyone elses house. There are different cultures where everyone has that rule. Don't feel bad about it.
Reply:No its not weird at all, it makes perfect sense to me, im surprised ppl actaully refuesed to take there shoes off (maybe their feet stank jks)
Reply:No it's not rude, the tricky part is how are you going to tell them?
Reply:No way- your house, your rules. Some people are just not very respectful. It's a shame- but stick to your guns!
Reply:its not rude

its YOUR house YOU make the rules
Reply:my mom always makes us but when we ask them she never does I hate it she just walks right in
Reply:I personally think it is really rude to leave your shoes on in someone else's house. Where I come from (Eastern Canada), everyone automatically takes their shoes off when they come in anyone's home. If that is not the custom where you live (and I have heard it is different is some parts of the US), then you have a dilemma I guess.

I have a child, and I would not tolerate someone's dirty shoes on my floor when my son was small. No way. If people are offended, that is their problem - maybe offer slippers or socks at the door, or offer to sit with them outside. You can buy slippers that go OVER your shoes - maybe get a few pairs of these and leave them by the door for the rude shoe people. See them at Lee Valley Tools - http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.asp...

I can't imagine someone refusing to take off their shoes. I mean, geez, wear clean socks!
Reply:NOT AT ALL!!!! It is YOUR home! You clean it and keep it the way you want it. I have a no shoes rule and I am a crazy, clean freak. I also have a child, a 2 yr old and a baby on the way. If someone would not abide by this request in my home... They could either opt to mop my floors or leave. It's quite simple. I am not trying to be rude, but some peoples homes you are afraid to step into. My home is beautiful, clean and comfy. You are welcome to visit, take your shoes off at the door... Don't worry about the kids crawling on my floor (it's spotless)... Grab a pillow and dive in front of the big screen for movie night knowing its clean... And so on... I take pride in my clean home, as I'm sure you do. And it's something we do well. Don't think you are being ridiculous by this. Think they are by being to lazy to untie their shoes...

Reply:You aren't asking too much at all! It's your home and it's your rules. Babies put everything in their mouths and if your one year old doesn't walk yet then that means he/she is crawling...meaning her/his hands touch the ground, then transfer to the mouth and well you get my drift.

Think of where all you walk in a day outside the home: the grocery store, a doctor's office, a post office, the street, the work place. All kinds of things collect on the bottom of the shoes. Mud you can see, germs and bacteria are unseen. It's best to remove the shoes before walking around common areas in the home. I keep the same rule and enforce it with everyone that comes to my home. It's just part of what I would like done to keep my family safe and my floors clean. My parents thought is was ridiculous at first, but they respect it and comply with it as it is my house.
Reply:Yeah I think its a little rude and even more unhealthy to take the shoes off.

Well ever took your shoes off and your feet stink, ever take your shoes off and you have no socks.........so you want people to go around your house bare foot do yeah, yeah know what kind of things you can catch from other people's feet..........YUK, its gross, so let them walk around your house with there shoes on. If all of us caught all the nasty things your thinking your baby is going to catch from other peoples shoes then alot of us talking to you now wouldn't have lived! Understand. Now get over the phobia!
